Despite this, young people are often underrepresented in water-related decision-making. Limited access to institutions, networks, and influence can prevent youth from contributing their knowledge, skills, and ideas to policy and governance processes. When youth perspectives are excluded, governance systems risk becoming short-sighted and disconnected from the challenges ahead.
SIWI works to support youth engagement by creating opportunities for young people to participate meaningfully in dialogue, knowledge exchange, and governance processes. We support intergenerational collaboration that connects youth perspectives with policy and practice at local, regional, and global levels. Through platforms such as World Water Week and targeted engagement processes, SIWI helps ensure that youth voices inform decisions that shape water’s future.
By supporting youth engagement in water governance, SIWI helps foster the next generation of leaders, researchers, and practitioners. Inclusive governance that values youth participation is better equipped to anticipate change, respond to emerging challenges, and deliver more resilient, just, and sustainable outcomes for people and ecosystems.
