Foundations for Source-to-Sea Management: Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin

Based on experience from Vu Gia-Thu Bon River Basin in Vietnam, this report provides insights on how the source-to-sea approach can be applied and how it can benefit stakeholders at all levels. It also provides recommendations for future actions.

The Vu Gia-u Bon River Basin is in central Vietnam and covers an area of more than 10,000 km², including some important tourist destinations. Plastic pollution is a major problem in the basin and the issue has in recent time become an important element of the political agenda, on national as well as local levels.

This makes Vu Gia-u Bon River Basin well suited for applying the Source-To-Sea Framework for Marine Litter Prevention. Taking such an approach to marine litter prevention can strengthen cooperation between upstream and down-stream stakeholders and coordination between relevant sectors. This may lead to the design of courses of action that ensure outcomes of mutual benefit while reducing negative impacts and improving overall system health. The report details the approach, its outcome, and discusses potential challenges and how to address them.

The Vu Gia-u Bon River Basin project is one of two pilot projects, conducted by SIWI and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
