Contributing to Sweden’s Climate Resilience: SIWI’s Role in the National Vulnerability Assessment

Anna Tengberg, Senior Advisor at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), has been appointed as an expert in Sweden’s National Climate and Vulnerability Assessment (NKSA), coordinated by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).

The assessment, which runs until the end of 2026, is part of Sweden’s national response to climate change and feeds into government policymaking on adaptation and resilience. As the only expert selected from SIWI, Anna contributes to the expert group on ecosystems—one of the critical system areas in the assessment process.

The ecosystem group brings together experts from SGI, SLU, the Swedish Forest Agency, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HAV), the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), multiple County Administrative Boards, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the National Heritage Board, the Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF), Formas, Stockholm University, among others.

Anna participated in the first workshop in March 2025, focusing on aquatic ecosystems. A second workshop is planned for November to review preliminary findings. The work continues into 2026, culminating in a final report to the Swedish Government by the National Expert Council on Climate Adaptation.

Her appointment also includes participation in a reference group that will oversee the drafting of the final text, ensuring scientific accuracy and practical relevance.

This recognition reflects SIWI’s role as a knowledge partner at both national and international levels, contributing to policy processes that drive climate resilience and sustainable water governance.

Water plays a pivotal role in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to build resilience safeguarding ecosystems and communities. World Water Week 2025 will focus on addressing the linked emergencies of climate change, environment degradation and biodiversity loss, emphasizing both mitigation and adaptation, alongside the broader goal of enhancing resilience.
